The tragic saga of a Cuban family in Miami reaches a turning point. In 2023, the father who fatally shot his son in Kendall has now been sentenced to 12 years in prison after pleading guilty.

Fifty-four-year-old David Contreras accepted a plea deal with the prosecution, admitting to involuntary manslaughter with a firearm. This decision allowed him to avoid facing a second-degree murder trial, a charge initially placed against him, as reported by Telemundo 51.

In addition to the prison term, the sentence includes 10 years of probation for the death of his son, Eric Contreras, a 21-year-old student from Florida International University (FIU), whose life was abruptly ended at their home in November 2023.

Following the shooting at their family residence on 10703 Southwest 84th Avenue, located in the quiet Kendall neighborhood of Miami-Dade County, Contreras himself called 911. Upon arrival, police discovered the young man with gunshot wounds; he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Unraveling a Family Dispute

Investigations revealed that the incident stemmed from a family argument after both had returned from a trip to Orlando. The confrontation escalated beyond control.

In a 911 call released during the trial, the father was heard lamenting, “What have I done? I was fighting with my son… I lost my mind,” underscoring the intense drama within their home.

Throughout the proceedings, Contreras claimed self-defense, alleging years of mistreatment by his son, but prosecutors dismissed his claims. Nevertheless, his family stood by him, and a judge even allowed him to remain under house arrest while awaiting trial.

A Community in Mourning

In the final hearing, Contreras broke his silence with a poignant statement to the court, “I have to live with this, Your Honor,” as reported by Local 10.

The case resonated deeply not only with the local community but also with Eric’s peers and friends at FIU, where he was a member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity. They remembered him as “a kind-hearted man who could light up any room.”

Authorities initially classified the incident as domestic violence. Police spokesperson Álvaro Zabaleta described it as an unfathomable tragedy: “Just thinking that the son’s life was in the father’s hands and he took it away, is something we can never understand.”

This judicial process unveils a narrative of family strife, unresolved tensions, and a fatal outcome that has irrevocably altered the lives of everyone involved. A tragedy that, despite the sentencing, leaves an irreparable wound.
