Reinaldo Jhon Lovell Querol, a relief pitcher for the Ciego de Ávila Tigers, has unexpectedly passed away at the age of 24.
The somber announcement was made on the official Facebook page of the Tigres Avileños.
"With heavy hearts and the shock of this tragic news, our page has learned of the sudden passing on Sunday afternoon of Avileño pitcher Reinaldo Jhon Lovell due to a heart attack. Lovell, just 24 years old, made his debut with Ciego de Ávila during the 64th National Baseball Series. Our deepest condolences go out to all his family and friends," they shared.
This Sunday, the sports website Swing Completo reported that the cause of death was a heart attack.
During the 64th National Baseball Series (2025-2026 season), Lovell Querol appeared in 11 games as a relief pitcher, throwing 13.0 innings with an earned run average of 11.08 and an opposing batting average of .314.
The Ciego de Ávila Tigers faced a challenging season in that tournament, finishing last with a record of 30 wins and 45 losses.
However, the team had previously celebrated a victory in the 2025 Cuban Baseball Elite League championship, sweeping the Las Tunas Leñadores in the finals.
Lovell Querol's passing comes just a year after the death of another young Cuban pitcher, Dorvis Lornet Navarro Queralta, who was a pitcher for the Isla de la Juventud Pirates. Navarro Queralta died of a heart attack on March 25, 2025, while training in Nueva Gerona, also at the age of 24.
Prior to these incidents, in March 2022, the Cuban baseball community mourned the loss of Ulfrido García, a 28-year-old pitcher from Santiago, who also succumbed to a heart attack.
