An out-of-control vessel triggered a maritime rescue operation at Crandon Park Marina in Key Biscayne, Florida, leading to a temporary closure of the facilities for several hours.

The Miami-Dade Fire Rescue teams were alerted around 10:52 a.m. on Friday following reports of a maritime incident involving individuals in the water, as confirmed by the rescue agency.

Firefighters, the U.S. Coast Guard, and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) were involved in the operation, deploying divers to the area as part of the search efforts.

Ultimately, everyone involved in the accident was found, and the park reopened on Saturday.

An adult suffered severe injuries and was airlifted to a nearby trauma center by rescue helicopter. No additional injuries were reported, and authorities have not disclosed details regarding the cause of the incident or the identity of the injured person.

During the closure, the Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office issued an official community alert stating that boaters could remove their vessels from the ramp but were prohibited from launching new ones into the water.

Located at 4000 Crandon Blvd. and managed by Miami-Dade County Parks, Crandon Park Marina offers 294 boat slips and a 24-hour open ramp. It is one of the busiest nautical facilities in South Florida, particularly on weekends.

The facilities reopened Saturday afternoon once the rescue operations concluded and the area was secured. The FWC has assumed responsibility for investigating the incident.

On the same day, another boating accident occurred in nearby waters at the Nixon Beach Sandbar in Biscayne Bay, where a woman lost her life after another vessel went out of control, according to the FWC's confirmation to the Miami Herald. Both incidents are under FWC investigation.

The occurrence of two significant accidents on the same day highlights the dangers of the heavy boat traffic in the area during spring weekends when Miami-Dade's waters see an especially high influx of recreational vessels.

Biscayne Bay and the Key Biscayne area have a history of serious boating accidents. In May 2024, 15-year-old Ella Adler died while wakeboarding near the same Nixon Beach Sandbar; two men were charged in April 2025 for reckless operation and navigation rule violations in that case.
