Famed Cuban musician Eliades Ochoa has unleashed a scathing critique of the current situation in Havana, proclaiming that "Cuba's ailment is so severe it no longer has a cure."
During an interview with the Spanish newspaper La Vanguardia, the renowned sonero discussed the harsh realities faced by the country and the suffering endured by the Cuban populace, taking direct aim at the regime.
"The leaders are doing a poor job, and the people are the ones who suffer," stated Ochoa, who until recently resided in Cuba and enjoyed full support from the government.
As a prominent figure in Cuban traditional music and a member of the internationally acclaimed Buena Vista Social Club, Ochoa portrayed a nation plagued by scarcity and reliant on remittances sent from abroad.
"After so many years of shortages... All Cubans who can, send money to their families. Everything is deteriorating over there," he commented.
His remarks echo a growing sentiment both within and outside the island about the failure of the regime's economic model.
The artist, who will turn 80 in June, also hinted at his concern for the country's future, emphasizing that the crisis has reached a critical juncture.
While he avoided labeling himself, stating, "I don't believe in politicians," his mention of "the leaders" was a direct jab at Miguel Díaz-Canel and other Cuban officials, whom he holds accountable for the widespread decline.
Despite his negative outlook on the national reality, Ochoa clings to a hope shared by millions of Cubans: "Our island is so beautiful, fertile, and musical... its people also deserve to be happy."
