Ernesto Soberón Warns: Cuban People Ready to Resist Any Attack

Thursday, March 26, 2026 by Robert Castillo

Ernesto Soberón Guzmán, Cuba's ambassador and permanent representative to the United Nations, issued a stern warning during an interview on Bloomberg This Weekend. He emphasized that any attempt to attack or invade Cuba will be met with fierce resistance from the Cuban people.

In his remarks, Soberón reiterated the regime's willingness to engage in dialogue with the United States, provided it is grounded in mutual respect.

The official Twitter account of Cuba at the UN shared the interview with the message: "Cuba reaffirms that only its people have the right to determine their destiny, free from external interference."

During the interview with journalist David Gura, Soberón Guzmán made clear the government's stance against U.S. pressures: "If anyone tries to invade or attack Cuba, they will face a nation of 10 million people ready to defend our sovereignty and independence."

He further warned that any foreign aggressor would encounter "noble and unyielding resistance." Upholding the longstanding official rhetoric, he stated that Cuba "would rather vanish as a nation" than revert to its pre-1959 condition.

Despite the firm rhetoric, Soberón Guzmán emphasized Cuba's openness to negotiation: "We genuinely wish to have this dialogue. This is not a new stance for the Cuban government; it is an enduring one."

He clarified that Cuba is prepared to discuss "everything," but only on the basis of mutual respect and non-interference.

These statements come at a time of heightened tension between Havana and Washington, not seen in decades. On March 16, President Trump labeled Cuba a "very weakened and failed nation" and expressed it would be an "honor" to take it over "in a friendly manner."

The following day, alongside Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Trump promised "imminent actions" and declared that "we will do something with Cuba very soon."

Rubio has pointed out that "energy is the choke point" to bring down the regime. This strategy unfolds amid an unprecedented energy crisis on the island.

After Nicolás Maduro's capture by U.S. forces on January 3, Cuba lost its primary source of Venezuelan oil.

The country currently produces only 40% of its energy needs. Last Friday, Deputy Minister Argelio Jesús Abad Vigoa admitted to the collapse of the distributed generation system, calling it the most complex situation in decades.

On March 13, Bloomberg reported that the Trump administration's plan aims to transform Cuba into an economic protectorate dependent on the United States, with negotiations involving figures close to Raúl Castro to replace Díaz-Canel, without direct military invasion.
