Last Saturday, officers from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission stepped in at Panama City Beach to curb what they described as excessive twerking during spring break festivities, according to a report by The New York Post.

Authorities also issued warnings to groups of women dancing on the sand that they could face criminal charges.

A reporter from the outlet, who claims to have witnessed the event, recounted how an officer, armed with a paintball gun and pepper spray, approached the beachgoers and shouted, "No twerking! You'll be charged with disorderly conduct!"

Bay County Sheriff Tommy Ford later clarified his officers' actions, stating, "It's not inherently illegal unless it becomes lewd or if there's a noise ordinance complaint."

Under Florida Statute 877.03, disorderly conduct is considered a second-degree misdemeanor, punishable by up to 60 days in jail and fines reaching $500.

Spring Break Crackdown in Florida

This intervention is part of a broader crackdown by authorities in Florida's panhandle on spring break 2026 activities. The weekend of March 14-16 witnessed one of the season's most severe incidents in Daytona Beach, where a social media-organized "takeover" drew thousands, leading to four shootings, a panic-induced stampede over the sound of breaking bottles, and over 130 arrests in Volusia County.

On March 20, Daytona Beach declared a state of emergency, imposing a curfew for minors from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m., doubling fines, and enforcing a 72-hour vehicle impoundment. Local sheriff Mike Chitwood also threatened civil lawsuits against those responsible for the chaos.

Sheriff Ford expressed concerns that the measures in Daytona might redirect crowds towards Panama City Beach. "When you have thousands of people showing up in one place, there are those with guns. There are gang members. And you have crowd dynamics where someone pulls a gun and causes a stampede," he warned.

Panama City Beach's Image Transformation

For years, Panama City Beach has been striving to reshape its image. Once the undisputed capital of American spring break, propelled to fame by MTV Spring Break at Club La Vela since 1986, the city faced increased gun violence and a fivefold surge in drug arrests by the mid-2010s, leading to a ban on alcohol consumption on the beach.
