Euro Experiences a Decline in Cuba's Black Market Exchange Rates

Friday, March 20, 2026 by Amelia Soto

On this Friday, the U.S. dollar is trading at 515 CUP in Cuba's unofficial market. Its high value persists amid a continuous shortage of foreign currency and increasing demand.

This American currency acts as the main benchmark for setting prices in the island's informal economy. The dollar's value directly affects the costs of goods and services, with everyday purchases such as food and basic necessities being influenced by this rate, further straining the purchasing power of Cubans.

Currently, the euro is valued at 575.5 CUP, making it the strongest currency in the informal market. However, its price has decreased by five pesos compared to Thursday, when it reached a record high of 580 CUP.

Many Cubans turn to the euro as an alternative safeguard against the devaluation of the peso, particularly for larger transactions or saving for international travel.

As for the MLC (Moneda Libremente Convertible), it is currently valued at 408 CUP, a decrease of two pesos from its value on March 19, when it traded at 410 CUP. Despite the significant gap compared to the dollar and the euro, this currency continues to be used in state-run stores.
