The Electric Company of Santiago de Cuba has issued a serious health hazard warning following reports of transformer oil thefts from multiple substations in the province. Alarmingly, this specialized dielectric oil is reportedly being misused for human consumption.

According to information shared by CMKW Radio Mambí on their Facebook page, authorities have identified criminal activities involving the theft of this oil from the electrical system's facilities.

Dielectric oil is a highly specialized and expensive product essential for electrical equipment, and its ingestion poses a significant threat to human health and life.

Beyond the health risks, the theft of this oil directly undermines the stability of the electrical system. Replacing the stolen material cannot be done promptly, exacerbating the already strained energy situation.

Impact on Electrical Infrastructure

Authorities noted that perpetrators often operate in groups, targeting remote areas where substations are located, usually under the cover of night.

These thefts are carried out using animal-drawn carts, large containers, and ladders.

Risks to Perpetrators and Legal Consequences

The Electric Company warned that those involved in these thefts are at significant risk, as there have been fatalities from electrocution during attempted thefts at electrical facilities.

The authorities reminded that the current Penal Code treats these acts as serious crimes, punishable by law.

The company reiterated its appeal to the public to report any suspicious activities related to electrical installations, aiming to safeguard the system and prevent risks to the community.
