Cuban Man Fatally Shot Outside Hialeah Apartment: What We Know So Far

Thursday, March 12, 2026 by Mia Dominguez

A Cuban man was fatally shot outside an apartment building in Hialeah in a violent incident partially captured by surveillance cameras. The alleged shooter was apprehended hours later, according to reports.

The shooting took place at approximately 6:18 a.m. on Wednesday, prompting residents to contact law enforcement after hearing numerous gunshots near West 19th Avenue and West 56th Street, close to an apartment complex's entrance.

Hialeah authorities reported multiple calls from residents who claimed to have heard up to ten shots, leading to a significant police presence in the area.

Upon arrival, officers discovered the lifeless body of a man on the sidewalk in front of the building.

Aerial footage from Telemundo 51's helicopter revealed the body covered with a yellow tarp as investigators secured the scene.

The Victim's Identity Revealed by Family

Initially, authorities did not release the victim's identity. However, family members identified him as Dick Coutin Estrada, a married father of two.

Adelkis, who identified herself as a cousin of the deceased's wife, told Telemundo 51 that the man was on his way to work when he was attacked.

"My cousin came here to work and provide for his family," she stated.

She also recounted how the family grew concerned when his car remained parked outside and he didn't answer his phone.

Through tears, she added, "It hurts because I care about my cousin. She's like a sister to me."

Neighbors mentioned that the victim, around 50 years old, had arrived in the United States from Cuba less than two years ago through humanitarian parole.

Suspect Apprehended After Police Search

Hours after the shooting, police arrested Dairon Rosas Delgado, 37, identified by Telemundo 51 as the alleged attacker and "neighbor" of the victim.

Authorities reported that the suspect fled immediately after the shooting, prompting a citywide search.

He was eventually arrested while driving near West 4th Avenue and West 18th Street, also in Hialeah.

The suspect now faces charges of second-degree murder with a firearm.

Hialeah police spokesman Eddie Rodríguez explained that initial rumors suggested the assailant might be barricaded in an apartment or had taken a hostage, but these were never confirmed. "After the incident, he fled the scene," Rodríguez explained.

The interrogation of the suspect could be crucial in uncovering the unknown motives behind the suspected homicide, Rodríguez noted.

Surveillance Video Captures Attack Moments

A surveillance video released later shows the moments leading up to the crime.

The footage reveals a man walking on the sidewalk as another individual approaches from behind.

The suspect appears to draw a weapon and open fire several times at the victim, who collapses immediately.

Another video from local media shows the man being pursued before the shooting, seemingly as he was leaving home for work.

Residents Awakened by a "Rain of Gunfire"

The barrage of gunfire startled several residents of the building and nearby homes.

"I think it was a rifle... there were so many shots... and then a woman screaming 'no, no, no!'" recounted Yanet Torres, a resident who was abruptly awakened by the shooting.

Another neighbor, Pedro, described a similar scene after hearing the gunfire.

"I heard the shots... like a rifle, about 10 shots. And a woman started screaming 'no, no'... I looked out from the balcony and saw a woman with a small dog. When I went outside after the police arrived, I saw him lying in front of the house," he shared.

Following the reports, police deployed patrols, crime scene investigators, and tactical units to secure the area.

Hialeah Mayor Bryan Calvo was also present, seen speaking with officers during the early hours of the investigation.

Currently, the motive behind the shooting remains under investigation as authorities continue to gather evidence and testimonies to clarify the precise events leading to the Cuban man's death outside his home.
