Cuba faced a tough defeat on Wednesday, falling 7-2 to Canada at Hiram Bithorn Stadium, which consequently dashed their hopes of advancing to the quarterfinals of the VI World Baseball Classic.

In a tense afternoon showdown in Puerto Rico, Cuba's shortcomings in offensive production and defensive errors allowed Canada to exploit every weakness, ultimately costing the Cuban team the game.

The Canadians took the lead in the third inning thanks to a sacrifice fly by Owen Caissie, which followed a passed ball by Cuban catcher Andry Pérez with two runners on base.

Left-hander Liván Moinelo conceded only this run over three and two-thirds innings, during which he walked three, struck out four, and gave up as many hits, including a double.

His replacement, Yariel Rodríguez, struggled due to poor defense, pitching for 1.2 innings and allowing four runs — two of which were unearned — tipping the scales in Canada's favor.

A home run by Abraham Toro in the fifth, a double by Bo Naylor, and a two-run single from Otto López in the sixth inning extinguished Cuba's hopes.

That inning was marked by an error from second baseman Yiddi Cappé and a catcher interference by Andrys, who had a game to forget, not living up to his usual quality as a catcher.

Cal Quantrill, the winning pitcher, went five innings, striking out four and walking just one. Under the guidance of Germán Mesa, Cuba managed to score a run before Quantrill exited, combining that walk with an error by the pitcher on a grounder from Yoelquis Guibert.

Reliever Indigo Díaz allowed Ariel Martínez's third hit of the day, which drove in a run for the Cubans. However, Adam Macko, after loading the bases with four balls, struck out the next batter, quelling any chance of a comeback.

The Canadians added another run in the eighth inning off Yoan López with a hit by Josh Naylor, and yet another in the ninth with a single from Caissie, this time off Raidel Martínez.

Relievers James Paxton and Eric Cersntola silenced the Cuban bats in the final third of the game.

With this loss, Cuba concluded their Group A campaign with a 2-2 record, which was insufficient to keep their tournament hopes alive.

Canada, finishing with a 3-1 record, secured the top spot in the group ahead of Puerto Rico and moved on to the quarterfinals for the first time in the history of the Classic.
