The manager of the Cuban baseball team, Germán Mesa, has announced plans to alter the lineup for the pivotal game against Canada, confirming that left-handed pitcher Liván Moinelo will be starting in this crucial match of the VI World Baseball Classic.

This update was shared by Mesa with Prensa Latina through a WhatsApp message, just hours before the showdown that will determine the second ticket from Group A to the quarterfinals.

Cuba enters this decisive match with a record of 2-1, having secured victories over Panama and Colombia, but recently falling 4-1 to Puerto Rico. Puerto Rico has already clinched a spot in the next round with an undefeated 3-0 record.

Regardless of the result between Puerto Rico and Canada, the clash between the Cuban and Canadian teams will be the deciding factor for who joins the Puerto Ricans in advancing to the tournament's next phase.

Lineup Changes in the Works

Mesa explained that the coaching staff has decided to review the performance from the initial three games and make offensive adjustments.

"After analyzing the games, we are planning some changes in the lineup," stated the strategist, noting that the final modifications will be determined following a coaches' meeting.

Throughout the tournament, fans and journalists have called for adjustments in the offensive order, but the manager had previously maintained faith in his players. Now, he acknowledges the need to rearrange the lineup for better results.

"The team's morale, spirit, and attitude are strong," assured the manager.

Moinelo: Key Player on the Mound

Mesa also confirmed that Liván Moinelo will be the starting pitcher, regarded as the leading arm in the Cuban pitching staff.

The left-hander arrives at the Classic with significant prestige following a standout season in the Japanese League with the SoftBank Hawks, where he was named the Pacific League's Most Valuable Player and was part of the championship's ideal team.

His presence on the mound is one of the team's main hopes for keeping their tournament aspirations alive.

Adjustments After Puerto Rico Loss

The manager also reflected on the loss to Puerto Rico, explaining that the game tilted early when the Puerto Ricans scored three runs in the second inning.

He further noted that the local pitching staff used their top relievers to halt the Cuban offense.

After hitting four home runs in the first two matches, Cuba managed only two hits against the Puerto Rican pitchers, creating an offensive drought that now demands urgent adjustments.

With the situation clear, Mesa summarized the team's objective simply: "The goal is clear: win one more game."

A victory against Canada would be enough for Cuba to advance to the quarterfinals of the World Classic.
