Independent journalist Camila Acosta has revealed that students gathered on the steps of the University of Havana on Monday are encircled by State Security agents.

"Students are gathered on the steps of the University of Havana. They are surrounded by the political police. I live nearby, and State Security has me under surveillance," Acosta shared on Facebook.

This peaceful sit-in by about twenty students at the University of Havana (UH) aims to protest the academic conditions and the part-time learning model that several universities in the nation continue to employ amidst the ongoing power crisis.

According to student accounts referenced by activist Magdiel Jorge Castro on social media, frustration arises from the regime's decision to persist with remote classes despite frequent power outages and connectivity issues affecting much of the country.

Students argue that the current energy situation hampers stable internet access and restricts participation in virtual academic activities, making it unfeasible to continue this educational format.

The discontent extends beyond the University of Havana. Reports from the same student sources indicate similar frustrations at other institutions, such as CUJAE and the University of Information Sciences (UCI).

Amid the tension, the University of Havana's administration moved up a leadership meeting initially scheduled for Monday to Sunday, aiming to address the unrest among students.

Journalist Patrick Oppmann of CNN confirmed on the social network X that "a group of about 20 students" is conducting a peaceful demonstration at the university.

"Happening now: A group of about 20 students is staging a peaceful sit-in to protest conditions at the University of Havana," the correspondent reported.
