Cubans both on the Island and in the diaspora paid heartfelt tributes to Alberto Herrero, the celebrated singer and entertainer known for his prominent role in Havana's cabaret scene throughout the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s.

The news of his passing, announced by his daughter Hossana Herrero Trimino on Thursday, spread swiftly across social media. Colleagues from the artistic community, friends, and fans fondly remembered his vibrant presence in Havana's nightlife.

"I hold onto everything we experienced and everything you taught me, your scent, and that unconditional love. Your laugh will always stay with me. You'll forever be my lucky charm, my guide, my light, my eternal love," Herrero Trimino shared on Facebook.

Singer Mirka Pratts mourned his passing, saying he succumbed "after a long battle with illness," and remembered him as the "King of Havana nights," a title he earned due to his dynamic stage presence in the capital's cabarets and hotels.

Herrero became a staple in the nightlife scene, performing in venues like the cabaret at the Hotel Capri and the Hotel Nacional. His shows became highly popular, combining a powerful voice, impeccable musical interpretation, humor, and engaging interaction with the audience, cementing his status as a consummate showman.

Alexis Valdés, an actor and comedian, recalled meeting Herrero in the 1980s when the artist was a dominant figure in Havana's nightlife. "There was no one like him during the nights in Havana," Valdés remarked, highlighting his ability to create a "magical atmosphere on stage," likening his performances to major international productions.

Valdés also pointed out Herrero's knack for performing popular songs of the time, engaging with the audience, improvising witty remarks, and sharing jokes during his shows. According to Valdés, Herrero was such an influential figure that when other singers filled in during his breaks, audiences missed his unique presence.

Born on January 5, 1946, in Holguín province, Herrero began his musical journey at a young age, joining local bands like Los Céntury. He later moved to Havana to pursue a solo career, performing in renowned cabarets such as Tropicana and the Parisien at the Hotel Nacional, and appearing on radio and television programs.

His rendition of the song "Quién te lo va a creer (Mentiras)" became one of the tracks closely associated with his career in Cuba's music scene. Herrero also performed internationally in countries such as Spain, Mexico, Italy, France, and various Eastern European and African nations.

In recent years, Herrero resided in the United States, continuing to perform in Miami venues. Since his arrival in 2012, according to Pratts, he graced stages at places like Hoy Como Ayer, Cubaocho, Alfaro’s, Casa Panza, Club Caribbean Night, Casa de la Década, and Clandestinos.

In January, the Cuban community in the U.S. was similarly moved by the passing of popular singer and composer Alfredito Rodríguez.

As of the hours following confirmation of Alberto Herrero's passing, there had been no official statement from Cuban authorities regarding his death.
