This week, U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth announced that the Pentagon has successfully neutralized a leader in Iran who was allegedly involved in a plot to assassinate former President Donald Trump during the 2024 election campaign. This event occurs amidst ongoing military tensions between Washington and Tehran.
During a March 4 press briefing at the Pentagon, Hegseth stated that the individual orchestrating the plan was tracked down and eliminated as part of the current U.S. military operations against the Iranian regime.
“He was found and terminated. Iran attempted to kill President Trump, but he had the final word,” Hegseth declared, alongside Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Dan Caine.
Unveiling the Plot Against Trump
Although Hegseth did not disclose the identity of the Iranian leader, experts speculate it could be the individual identified by the U.S. Department of Justice in 2024 as the mastermind behind a plan orchestrated by the Revolutionary Guard to assassinate Trump using hired gunmen.
The Defense Secretary emphasized that this plot was not the primary catalyst for the ongoing war, though he confirmed that those responsible were included among the military targets.
“This was never the focus of the operation in any way. It wasn’t brought up by the president or anyone else. I ensured, along with others, that those accountable were added to the target list,” he stated.
Tehran has consistently denied any attempts to assassinate the former U.S. president.
Trump’s Personal Accusations
Adding a personal element to the U.S.-Iran confrontation, Trump recently claimed in an interview with ABC News that Iran’s supreme leader, Ali Khamenei, had tried to kill him.
“Khamenei attempted to kill me twice, but I got to him before he got to me. I was quicker,” Trump stated, linking these alleged attempts to the heightened tensions following the 2020 U.S.-ordered airstrike that killed Iranian General Qasem Soleimani, a revered figure in Iran.
U.S. prosecutors have since charged individuals in connection with at least two plots purportedly aimed at assassinating Trump, attributed to networks with ties to Tehran.
Authorities clarified that these plans were unrelated to the two assassination attempts Trump faced during the 2024 campaign: one at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, and another while golfing in West Palm Beach, Florida.
Military Campaign Against Iran
The announcement regarding the alleged plot coincided with the Pentagon detailing its ongoing military campaign against Iran. Dubbed “Operation Epic Fury,” this joint offensive with Israel aims to weaken Iran’s military capabilities and halt its weapons programs.
Hegseth reported that the attacks have significantly damaged Iranian forces. “Iran’s air force no longer exists; it was destroyed in 2026. Their navy is submerged in the Persian Gulf,” he declared.
The ultimate goal, according to Hegseth, is to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. “Iran will never possess a nuclear weapon,” he asserted.
Early Successes and Continuing Conflict
Hegseth described the early days of the operation as producing “historic results,” though he acknowledged that the conflict remains in its initial stages.
“We’re only four days in. The metrics are shifting, and things are stabilizing. It’s early, but as Trump said, we’ll take all the time necessary to ensure success,” he indicated.
The Pentagon claims that U.S. and Israeli forces have gained complete control over Iranian airspace, facilitating further attacks. “Last night, the world’s two most powerful air forces had total control of the Iranian skies. This means complete airspace dominance,” he asserted.
Despite this aerial supremacy, the Defense Secretary admitted that some Iranian missiles breached U.S. defenses, resulting in the deaths of six soldiers. He vowed that these losses would be avenged.
Reasons Behind the Ongoing War
Washington has justified its current offensive against Iran on various grounds: Iran’s nuclear program, its development of long-range ballistic missiles, its support for regional armed groups, and to a lesser extent, the alleged plots against Trump.
Though U.S. officials acknowledge that these conspiracies influenced the political context of their decision, they maintain that they are not the primary reason for the conflict.
As the military campaign persists and tensions in the Middle East rise, questions remain about the true scope of the operation, the identity of the slain Iranian leader, and the impact this conflict may have on regional stability.
