Mother of Young Man Killed in Border Guard Incident Demands Return of Her Son’s Body in Cuba

Thursday, March 5, 2026 by Hannah Aguilar

The mother of Ledián Padrón Guevara, one of the four individuals who lost their lives during a confrontation between a boat from Florida and Cuban Border Guard Troops on February 25, has publicly condemned the authorities for withholding her son’s body, preventing her from laying him to rest.

Journalist Mario J Pentón shared a brief video on social media showing the deceased's mother, Deysi Guevara Verdecia, in tears and visibly distraught.

Tragically, Padrón Guevara was an only child, and his parents are deaf-mute, adding another layer of heartbreak to this situation.

As reported by Pentón, citing the mother’s account, officials informed the family that there is no fuel available to transport the body to the eastern part of Cuba, where the family resides.

Instead, they were presented with two choices: to cremate the body or to bury it in the province of Villa Clara.

The family is firmly opposed to both suggestions and is demanding the right to transport the young man's remains to his hometown for a proper farewell. They are also calling for an independent investigation to uncover the truth behind the incident.

"The family insists on a thorough and independent investigation to reach the bottom of this tragedy," the journalist concluded.

A total of four were killed and six injured during the armed clash with a border guard boat on the morning of February 25.

Official reports claim that a fast boat registered in Florida was intercepted near Cayo Falcones, in the Corralillo municipality of Villa Clara, after entering Cuban territorial waters.

Authorities allege that gunfire was initiated from the boat towards a Border Guard unit, resulting in a shootout.

The official narrative suggests that the boat's occupants were in possession of assault rifles, handguns, incendiary devices, bulletproof vests, and camouflage uniforms, and had intentions of entering Cuba with violent objectives.

While the Cuban government is pursuing legal actions against the survivors on charges related to terrorism, the family of Ledián Padrón Guevara continues to await the return of his body for burial and seeks clarity on the events that transpired during the encounter.
