Cuban Government Expresses Regret Over Honduras Ending Medical Agreement

Thursday, March 5, 2026 by Aaron Delgado

The Cuban government has expressed disappointment over Honduras' decision not to renew the agreement that allowed Cuban doctors to work in the Central American nation. This move marks a loss of financial support for the regime following the departure of 168 healthcare professionals.

Juan Roberto Loforte Osorio, the Cuban ambassador to Honduras, shared his views on TSiHonduras during the farewell of the medical professionals at Ramón Villeda Morales International Airport in San Pedro Sula.

According to Loforte, the agreement between the two countries came to an end, and the Honduran authorities opted not to extend it with the new administration in place.

"The agreement we had with the Honduran government concluded, and it was not renewed, so they are returning to Cuba," he stated.

Loforte mentioned that the Honduran government cited budgetary constraints as the reason for not continuing the program.

The ambassador noted that the Cuban doctors had been in Honduras for two years, serving in most of the country's departments.

During their stay, the medical brigade primarily focused on areas such as ophthalmology and various healthcare services.

The diplomat also mentioned that upon their return to Cuba, some of the professionals might rejoin the Cuban healthcare system or be deployed to other international medical missions.
