Tourist Chaos in Cuba: From Cayos Reservation to Varadero Hotel Ordeal

Tuesday, February 24, 2026 by Zoe Salinas

The Cuban content creator Octavio Castillo Quesada shared on social media the frustrating ordeal he and his partner experienced during what was supposed to be a relaxing weekend getaway in Varadero.

Their initial plan was a trip to the Cayos, but due to the ongoing fuel shortage impacting the nation, this was thwarted. As an alternative, they rebooked for Varadero, where transportation from Havana was still operational.

Varadero Booking Filled with Challenges

"We arrived at the hotel we had reserved, only to find it closed," Castillo recounted. They were supposed to be transferred to another resort; however, upon arrival, their names were mysteriously missing from the system.

Ultimately, they were directed to the Hotel Arenas Doradas, but even there, the problems persisted. Castillo recounted a lengthy waiting period before they could check in, only to face more surprises.

"I was informed that there was no room available for us. I had to keep calm. Eventually, we were attended to, and I secured a room at a hotel I didn’t even know we were going to," he explained. Footage shows his visit to the Hotel Internacional de Varadero.

Regarding the stay, Castillo was blunt: "The service and organization leave much to be desired. I wouldn't recommend anyone visit Varadero right now."

Is the Blame on Travel Agencies, Fuel Crisis, or Inept Mintur Management?

Following the video's release, some users suggested the issue might not lie with the travel agency. One comment pointed out that many hotels have recently closed, even with prior reservations, making the situation beyond the agencies' control.

Castillo clarified his stance: "I never said the problem was with the agency. The issue is poor organization when addressing such problems. If hotels close, at the very least, I should be allowed to choose a second option."

The lack of clear information and alternatives for customers exacerbates the experience, especially when changes occur at the last minute without any choice. The Ministry of Tourism (Mintur) places customers wherever they see fit, ignoring the hefty price paid for those bookings in foreign currency.

Fuel Shortages and the Tourism Crisis in Cuba

The ongoing fuel crisis in Cuba continues to directly affect tourism, leading to cancellations, temporary hotel closures, and haphazard traveler relocations.

Just weeks ago, an Argentine tourist reported that upon arriving at her hotel in Cayo Santa María, she was informed the resort was closing and she would be moved to another Meliá chain location.

In a scenario where the State reorganizes operations and resources based on energy availability, many travelers find themselves with limited choices. If the assigned hotel or room fails to meet expectations, alternatives are often scant.

While the government pushes for tourism recovery as a critical economic pillar, experiences like Castillo's highlight the structural difficulties facing the sector amid the country's energy crisis.
