The rural areas of Cuba have recently seen a troubling spike in violence, underscored by a recent attempted theft at the property of a 70-year-old farmer. This incident is yet another indication of the country's growing insecurity.
Mileydi Barrionuevo Robainas, who uses the Instagram handle "Madre Sin Filtros en Cuba," reported the attack, which directly impacted her grandfather and his livestock—assets built through years of dedication and hard work.
The attempted robbery occurred in the early hours of Saturday morning.
"They tried to steal the animals that provide his livelihood, the ones he has cared for with such dedication. Not only that, but they also attempted to poison his dogs with tainted meat," Mileydi explained.
"And if that wasn't enough, when my grandfather stepped outside, they attacked him with stones. Thankfully, it didn't escalate further, as neighbors came to his aid after hearing the commotion," she detailed.
The footage shared by Mileydi highlights the violence and lack of law enforcement in the area.
She emphasizes that while scarcity is widespread, it gives no one the right to profit from another's labor or to threaten their life.
"Fortunately, they missed him with the stones, but it's alarming that two animals' lives seem to be valued more than a human's. How far are we willing to go as a society?" she questioned.
According to her, thefts at her grandfather's farm are not uncommon. "More than eight animals have already been stolen, and nothing is done about it."
Mileydi pointed out that the authorities' indifference and the scarce police presence in rural areas exacerbate the problem, leaving farmers and ranchers feeling like constant targets for theft and violence.
