Hairdresser in Cuba Shocked by Client's Request for a "Fox Cut" Due to Therian Identity

Sunday, February 22, 2026 by Oscar Guevara

Just a few days ago, many on social media were pondering whether the phenomenon of self-identified therians would reach Cuba. The question now seems far from hypothetical.

A Cuban hairdresser, known on Instagram as @leuryzsalon, was taken aback when she received a message from a young woman requesting a very specific makeover: not a "wolf cut," but a "fox cut," because, as she explained, she identifies as a fox.

"She told me it was different because she is a therian," the stylist recounted in a video that quickly went viral. Initially, she thought it was a joke. "I'm a hairdresser, not a veterinarian. This is not a pet grooming shop," she remarked, admitting she was unsure how to respond. Nonetheless, she scheduled an appointment.

The young woman explained that she's just starting in this "world," having found her identity and wanting to adapt her appearance to this newfound self-perception. She even mentioned identifying as a Vulpes fox, a term the hairdresser had to Google as she wasn't familiar with the species.

But the story didn't end there.

Another video surfaced on social media, featuring a young Cuban woman residing in Havana who openly identifies as a "seal therian." On camera, she asserts that although she can't afford a mask or fur "due to the country's economic situation," she identifies as a seal and even mimics the animal's sound.

This contrast has not gone unnoticed by users. While some react with humor, others express confusion or concern. The phenomenon, already viral in countries like the United States, Mexico, and Argentina, is now beginning to produce its own testimonies on the Island.

The term therian is used to describe individuals who claim a psychological or spiritual identification with an animal, though they recognize their biological humanity. Platforms like TikTok and Instagram are filled with videos of young people wearing masks, artificial tails, or mimicking animal behavior.

In Cuba, where global trends often blend swiftly with local creativity, the topic has sparked a debate that extends beyond mere anecdotes. Some defend personal freedom of identity and expression, while others view it as an extreme fashion driven by social media.

For many, the most striking aspect is not just the animal identity, but the Cuban context in which it occurs: young people discussing masks and fur amidst a reality marked by economic shortages, migration, and generational frustration.

Is this simply a fleeting digital trend? A search for identity in uncertain times? Or the beginning of communities that will also find a foothold on the Island?

What once seemed distant is now at the doorstep. And in a country where any phenomenon can become a national debate within hours, the conversation is just beginning.
