Colombian President Gustavo Petro has called on the United States to reconsider its stance on Cuba and reopen channels of communication.
"I urge the US to revise its approach towards Cuba and to ignite a solar energy initiative throughout the island. Latin America can contribute by manufacturing solar panels, with Colombia supplying its silica sands and copper. We are already producing panels for export if necessary," Petro expressed on Sunday through one of his typically lengthy and scattered posts on X.
Petro emphasized the importance of mutual understanding and respecting each country's history, stating, "We need to learn to coexist despite our differences, and the dialogue between the US and Cuba should be revived."
The Colombian leader voiced his opposition to the blockade on Cuba, asserting that "more freedom, not more restrictions," is needed.
"The current embargo on Cuba stems from a falsehood propagated by Duque: ignoring that Cuba offered its territory to facilitate peace in Colombia at the request of the Colombian government during Santos' administration. I am grateful to Cuba for collaborating with Norway for peace in Colombia," Petro stated, referencing bilateral relations.
Petro argued that Cuba "requires a shift from petroleum to solar energy."
"Transformations in energy sources also alter societal structures; we should not fear the natural progression of history," he remarked, hinting at the island's need for transition.
In the latter part of his post, Petro praised the Cuban people and invited the White House to appreciate the music of Silvio Rodríguez.
"Cuba is a gem of the Caribbean, with a cultured populace that could greatly contribute to humanity through its knowledge and culture. I believe American society should embrace Cuban music and art more; when hurricanes brew over Martí's island, I find solace in 'oh melancholy of the Cuban troubadour poet Silvio Rodríguez,'" he shared.
Petro added, "Silvio would sound magnificent, to those who appreciate art, within the white walls of the White House in Washington. I would even accompany him if he wishes, to enjoy his songs of art and beauty, so full of elegance. Art and culture unite people, whereas barbarism divides them."
He concluded with another cryptic statement: "There is no crime in the free transport of oil in the Caribbean, but it would be preferable for the Caribbean's energy to come from the sun that rises almost every day."
Understanding Petro's Call for US-Cuba Dialogue
Why does President Petro want the US to change its policy towards Cuba?
President Petro believes that fostering dialogue and mutual understanding between different nations is crucial. He also emphasizes the potential for cooperation in renewable energy, suggesting that a change in policy could lead to collaborative efforts in solar energy development.
What role does Colombia play in Petro's proposal for Cuba?
Colombia is positioned as a key player in this proposal by supplying materials like silica sands and copper for solar panel production. Petro highlights that Colombia is already capable of producing panels for export, suggesting a regional collaboration in renewable energy.
