The official broadcaster, CMHS Radio Caibarién, has reported that the municipality of Caibarién in Villa Clara has begun crafting handmade coffins to address the severe shortage impacting funeral services across Cuba.

Through a Facebook post, the station outlined how a Local Development project aims to shorten the waiting time for transporting and burying the deceased, ensuring "a dignified service during such a sensitive time for families."

"Once again, it's the power of the people solving Cuba's problems. The government is merely decorative," commented an individual.

The state-run media outlet blamed the U.S. embargo for the crisis in Cuban funeral homes, prompting swift reactions from internet users.

"Oh, because the United States is supposed to send the coffins for the dead in Cuba too. I'm speechless," a user remarked.

This announcement comes just days after a story went viral involving a family in Velasco, Gibara (Holguín), who had to construct a coffin using cardboard and adhesive tape due to a complete lack of caskets at the local funeral home.

The incident was brought to light by Hermes Yasell, the nephew of the deceased, who shared on social media how they assembled the makeshift coffin while the widow wept.

Juana Bruzón Cruz, the widow, recounted that her husband's body remained at home for hours, without electricity or a funeral car. The deceased was eventually transported by the family on a tricycle to the cemetery.

These personal stories paint a picture of a structural collapse in Cuba's funeral services, amid a crisis that affects Cubans even in their final farewell.
