In recent days, transportation costs both within Havana and for interprovincial travel in Cuba have surged dramatically.

A review by CiberCuba of social media posts reveals the steep fares citizens now face for traveling within the capital and to other regions.

Getting around Havana has become an overwhelming financial burden for many Cubans. A trip from Boyeros to the city center can cost as much as 600 CUP, while traveling from Parque de la Fraternidad to Guanabo could set you back 1,000 CUP.

The situation is even graver for longer distances. For journeys to the eastern provinces, prices range from 15,000 to 30,000 CUP, depending on the destination and type of vehicle.

For instance, traveling from Ciego de Ávila to Las Tunas may cost approximately 7,000 Cuban pesos (CUP), whereas a trip from Havana to Ciego de Ávila could reach up to 25,000 CUP.

Additionally, there are reports of payments in foreign currency for interprovincial travel. Private vehicles are reportedly charging between 250 and 300 USD, and some routes even demand as much as 400 USD.

At the heart of this fare increase is the soaring cost of fuel. Last week, a liter of gasoline in the informal market was priced at 2,500 CUP, but it has now escalated to 4,000 CUP.

Since January, Cuba has not received any fuel shipments. The U.S. has imposed tariffs on countries trading oil with the island, exacerbating Cuba's internal energy crisis and leaving countless Cubans stranded, unable to travel within the nation.
