This Friday, Cuban authorities identified the four individuals who lost their lives in a major accident on the National Highway in Sancti Spíritus. The tragic event also resulted in 17 injuries, with two people in critical condition.
The accident occurred around 11:00 PM on Thursday near kilometer 336, close to the bridge over the Zaza River. A bus from the Diana brand, traveling from Havana to the eastern provinces, was involved in an incident whose causes have yet to be officially determined.
According to details provided by the Camilo Cienfuegos Provincial General Hospital to the newspaper Escambray, those who perished were identified as:
- Edilberto Aldana García, 23, from Vertientes, Camagüey
- Conrado Peña López, 58, from Santiago de Cuba
- Niurka de la Caridad Argelí Ladisté, 56, from Santiago de Cuba
- Ualter Chávez Galán, 30, from Cauto, Granma
All four victims died at the scene of the accident.
Dr. Malena Morera Campos, who coordinates Therapies and Emergencies at the hospital, noted that the two critically injured patients have undergone surgery. One patient suffers from severe cranioencephalic trauma, including a fractured frontal bone, while the other has a right hemothorax and liver laceration.
Among the injured is a five-year-old child, currently being treated at the José Martí Pérez Provincial Pediatric Hospital. Fortunately, the child did not sustain serious injuries. The remaining injured individuals are recovering well and are under medical supervision. Dr. Morera Campos mentioned that follow-up ultrasounds and other procedures have not revealed any complications thus far.
Local authorities visited the healthcare facility and confirmed that the hospital is equipped with the necessary human and material resources to care for the patients, including blood donations. They also stated that once the injured are medically cleared, arrangements will be made for their transportation back to their respective provinces.
The police continue to investigate the accident to determine its causes, highlighting once again the ongoing issues with road safety in Cuba.
