Cuban State TV Claims Rubio Misled Trump with "Negotiation Story"

Thursday, February 12, 2026 by Amelia Soto

Cuban state television has asserted that U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio allegedly misled President Donald Trump with a fabricated "story" regarding negotiations between Washington and Havana.

In a broadcast, host Rey Gómez reported that Cuban Deputy Foreign Minister Carlos Fernández de Cossío has consistently denied any existence of negotiations aimed at preventing direct U.S. action against Cuba.

The diplomat emphasized that while the Cuban government is open to discussions "on equal terms and without preconditions," he refuted any dialogues occurring under the conditions purportedly circulated in social media and U.S. statements.

The TV segment alleged that Trump has publicly claimed negotiations are underway with Cuban authorities. However, the presenter described these assertions as the product of alleged manipulation by Rubio and other officials.

"It seems clear that the Secretary of State has led President Trump to believe the tale of negotiations," Gómez stated, adding that it constitutes "a blatant manipulation" and the creation of a "dangerous pretext."

Gómez also referenced Senator Mario Díaz-Balart and the U.S. ambassador in Havana, Mike Hammer, as part of what he referred to as "spokespeople for Rubio's plan for regime change in Cuba."

In the commentary aired by state television, it was further suggested that Rubio has "made Trump dance to his tune" and "used him for his purposes," implying that the Secretary of State might be leveraging the Cuban topic to advance his own political agenda.

These statements are part of the regime's official narrative, which denies any formal negotiations with Washington while accusing segments of the U.S. government of fostering escalation against the island.
