The Cuban community in Austin, Texas is seeking financial assistance to manage funeral expenses and repatriate the remains of Rafael Jesús Gómez Collado, a 25-year-old from Holguín who tragically lost his life in a car crash on February 4.

Rafael had moved to the United States just three years ago, following a challenging journey across the southern border.

Despite the hurdles of immigration, he successfully gained residency and began building a life with his partner. The couple was navigating life alone in the U.S., while their families remained in Cuba.

According to friends and family, his life was abruptly cut short by the tragic accident that shattered his aspirations.

His wife, who is his only close relative in the U.S., now faces the solitary burden of mourning her husband and handling the financial strain of funeral and consular proceedings.

To cover the costs of the funeral and the repatriation of his body to Cuba, a GoFundMe campaign titled “In Memory of Rafa - Funeral Expenses” has been launched.

The campaign description reads: “With immense sorrow, we share the passing of Rafa, a beloved individual who touched the lives of those who knew him.”

One of Rafael's deepest desires, as expressed by those close to him, was to reunite with his family.

The campaign further outlines: “Today, fulfilling that wish involves facing the expenses of the funeral and the complicated logistics of returning his body to his homeland, a process that must be completed quickly and is financially demanding.”

The statement makes clear that all funds raised will strictly go towards these expenses, emphasizing that even small contributions can make a significant impact.

“If you're unable to donate, sharing this campaign also greatly helps us,” the petition concludes.

As of this article's publication, over $16,500 of the $20,000 target has been raised.
