Cubans Crowd Outside Nicaraguan Embassy After Visa-Free Entry Ends

Monday, February 9, 2026 by Emma Garcia

On Monday, a throng of Cubans gathered outside the Nicaraguan Embassy in Havana, eagerly seeking information following Nicaragua's announcement to end visa-free entry for Cuban citizens.

Social media is abuzz with videos showcasing long lines and visibly bewildered individuals at the entrance of the diplomatic mission, all trying to grasp the impact on their travel plans.

The anxiety is especially intense among those who have already purchased tickets to Managua, a key departure point for Cubans aiming to emigrate. Many fear losing their investment or becoming ensnared in bureaucratic red tape.

This decision was confirmed on Sunday via an official statement from Nicaragua's Ministry of the Interior. The statement clarified that Cuban citizens holding ordinary passports are now among those requiring a pre-approved visa to enter the Central American nation.

Visa applications must be submitted online, through the institutional email solicitudes@mint.gob.ni, and can be processed “from anywhere in the world” as long as Nicaragua's legal requirements are met.

The Ministry emphasized that these consulted visas for Cuban nationals will be free of charge. Although the visa process is cost-free, the statement did not specify the duration of the evaluation and approval timeline.

The visa-free policy, initially approved in 2021, was intended to promote tourism and foster "humanitarian family relations" between Cuba and Nicaragua. However, it coincided with a significant rise in irregular migration from the island to the United States, with Managua serving as the starting point for these migration routes.

In recent years, Washington has accused the government of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo of facilitating migrant transit.

The reinstatement of the visa requirement comes amid increasing international pressure on Managua and aligns with the tougher stance of former President Donald Trump towards the Cuban regime.
