Transport Crisis: MITRANS Implements Significant Service Reductions

Saturday, February 7, 2026 by Elizabeth Alvarado

The Ministry of Transportation (MITRANS) announced on Friday a series of significant reductions and suspensions in both national and local transportation services due to the current emergency situation.

Among the measures are a severe cutback in the frequency of national train departures, the halting of waiting lists, and limitations on worker transfers, with priority given to essential sectors such as health, ports, and airports.

According to the information revealed on the Round Table program, beginning at midnight on Friday, national train services will be reduced to just one departure every eight days for each destination.

The affected routes include: Havana–Santiago de Cuba / Santiago de Cuba–Havana, Havana–Guantánamo / Guantánamo–Havana, Havana–Holguín / Holguín–Havana, and Havana–Bayamo–Manzanillo / Manzanillo–Bayamo–Havana.

Additionally, MITRANS has suspended the current Waiting Lists service and clarified that Last-Minute Terminals will not be operational.

Passengers holding tickets for bus, train, or maritime travel that have been canceled and who do not wish to travel are advised to visit the nearest Ticket Sales Agency to request a refund.

It is stated that a full refund, 100% of the ticket price, will be provided up to 30 days after the date shown on the ticket.

Local Transport Adjustments: Schools, Workers, and Essential Services

For local transportation, the ministry has announced that student and teacher bus services will be adjusted "to the needs agreed upon" with those sectors. The services for special schools and medibuses will continue to operate.

Furthermore, the daily worker transfers conducted by ETT (TRANSMETRO) and other operators in the regions are to be suspended, except for those related to ports, airports, and other prioritized sectors. Special route services with minibuses will also continue in cities where they are currently operating.

Finally, MITRANS emphasized the use of available electric transportation for key transfers related to health and other "vital" sectors.

In terms of TAXISCUBA's electric tricycles, their organization will be determined by regional authorities, but "always" ensuring compliance with technical standards and daily parking at designated bases.
