Manuel Herrera, a Cuban chef, embarked on a harrowing journey that few could endure. His path to the U.S. took him through Spain, Ecuador, Panama, and Mexico before he reached the southern border, seeking asylum via the CBP One app.

However, instead of finding the freedom he sought, Herrera was detained by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and taken to the Adelanto detention center in California, as reported by Univision.

"Freedom is the most precious thing for a human being, and that's what I'm feeling right now," Herrera expressed with emotion.

"It was a miracle, a complete dream from the start because I didn't have much hope," he added.

During his six-month detention, Manuel drew comfort from his faith and the friendships he formed.

In the facility, he met Roberto Guzmán, a Mexican chef detained by immigration authorities in Corona.

"He was the first person I connected with over food. We're both chefs, and that bond carried us through the entire time I was there with him," Herrera reminisced.

Roberto was released in June 2025 and, true to his word, didn't forget his friend. He sought out a lawyer, raised funds, and began assisting other detainees, eventually securing Manuel's freedom.

"Gratitude, he promised me and delivered, and here I am free thanks to him," the Cuban chef declared.

Manuel now works in a restaurant, cherishing each day as a fresh opportunity.

"Whether it's as a dishwasher, a chef, or anything else, you must thank God," he stated.

His next dream is to reunite with his son and mother in Cuba.

"They're thrilled, eager to see me, and I'm eager to see them. That's the first thing I'll do," he said with a smile.

However, the story is not yet complete. Roberto Guzmán's case remains in court, and his immigration status is still uncertain.

"I told him I won't feel fully accomplished until your situation is resolved too," Manuel assured, indicating his happiness is not complete while his friend and supporter is not entirely secure in the United States.

In the meantime, the Cuban chef continues to prepare for obtaining his driver's license and completing the process for his permanent residency.

His story has become a beacon of hope, faith, and solidarity among migrants.
