Cuba has introduced 25 fully electric ambulances into its national healthcare system, marking the country's first-ever deployment of these eco-friendly vehicles, as reported by the Ministry of Public Health (MINSAP).
These ambulances, manufactured in China, have been delivered to specialized transport workshops in Havana. They are primarily intended for inter-hospital and intra-hospital transfers within the capital's medical facilities, according to a report from the state-run Canal Caribe.
Officials from MINSAP highlighted that the ambulances boast an approximate range of 380 kilometers. Their addition aims to bolster emergency and patient transport services, sectors currently plagued by severe challenges due to fuel shortages and the aging vehicle fleet.
"They offer the same level of ‘comfort’," stated Abel González, MINSAP’s Director of Transport Services. He emphasized that these vehicles were procured to meet the government's directive to shift towards a "transition in the energy matrix."
For years, patient transport systems have faced significant criticism over delays, lack of available units, and poor vehicle conditions, affecting healthcare delivery across various provinces.
The official assured that technical maintenance and battery replacements are "guaranteed," with plans to import additional electric ambulances by 2026, in collaboration with the Ministry of Transport.
These new electric vehicles complement other recent arrivals intended to "enhance" patient care services in the country.
