Law enforcement officials, including agents from the U.S. Border Patrol (USBP) and the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, have apprehended a charter boat captain in Miami, seizing a substantial quantity of cocaine, along with a firearm, cash, and the vessel itself.
Michael W. Banks, the Chief of the U.S. Border Patrol, confirmed on X that the operation led to the confiscation of "over 22 kilograms of cocaine," which is more than 50 pounds. Additionally, authorities seized a handgun, approximately $8,000 in what he described as "illicit proceeds," and the boat utilized by the suspect.
The individual in custody is a U.S. citizen and is facing charges of possessing cocaine with the intent to distribute.
"Our law enforcement operations are the frontline in keeping these deadly narcotics away from our neighborhoods and out of our homes," Banks declared in his post.
While the identity of the captain has not been disclosed, Banks emphasized that the arrest was the result of collaborative efforts between federal and local agencies.
Authorities have yet to detail how the drug trafficking operation was detected or the origin of the drugs, but this case adds to a series of recent seizures in South Florida, a region considered a strategic entry point for drugs via maritime routes.
The suspect remains in federal custody and is expected to appear before a court, where he will be formally charged with possession with intent to distribute.
