Trump Indicates Potential Deal with Cuba Amid High-Level Talks

Sunday, February 1, 2026 by James Rodriguez

On Sunday, President Donald Trump revealed that his administration is engaged in high-level discussions with Cuba, expressing optimism about reaching an agreement.

"Cuba has been a failed nation for a long time, and now without Venezuela's support, they are in a difficult position. We're in talks with Cuba's top officials to see what can be done," Trump stated to reporters from his Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida.

He continued, "I want to ensure that those who fled here under harsh conditions can return to Cuba and reunite with their families after years of separation. I believe we will strike a deal with Cuba."

Trump's comments came as he arrived at Mar-a-Lago for the wedding of Dan Scavino, a former member of his administration during his first term as president.

The President's remarks occur amid a tightening of U.S. policy toward Havana, characterized by new sanctions and a deepening economic and energy crisis in Cuba.

Recently, Trump indicated that his administration had initiated exploratory contacts with Cuba, a move that contrasts with the simultaneous tightening of sanctions.

The White House has not denied these contacts, while Havana has remained officially silent.

Currently, Cuba faces an unprecedented energy crisis, exacerbated by an executive order signed by Trump aimed at cutting off the island's oil supply through sanctions on third-party countries.

This measure coincided with the halt of oil shipments from Mexico and the end of Venezuelan support, leading to intensified blackouts and the collapse of essential services.

Washington describes the pressure as a strategy to force political changes, while the Cuban government condemns what it calls an "energy blockade" and refuses any dialogue under current sanctions.
