A Cuban resident, accused of assaulting a 95-year-old woman nearly a year ago at a senior care facility in southwest Miami-Dade, was taken into custody on Tuesday and now faces criminal charges, authorities have reported.
On May 20, 2025, Berta Canina Ramos was caught in the act of striking an elderly woman at the Seasons of Garden Senior Residence, located at 17250 SW 137th Ave, where the elderly victim resides.
Canina Ramos, a 61-year-old Miami resident, is charged with physical abuse against an elderly or disabled individual.
According to an arrest warrant from the Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office, as cited by Local 10 News, an employee at the nursing home was in the dining area assisting residents when she heard a loud cry.
The employee turned to see Canina Ramos yelling at the elderly victim and subsequently striking her on the shoulder and arm with an open hand.
The employee attempted to stop the attack by stepping between Canina Ramos and the elderly woman. Although the aggressor initially retreated, she returned moments later to shout at the victim once more.
Authorities indicated that the accused grabbed the victim's clothing and struck her again, "this time grasping her wrist with enough force to cause an abrasion that resulted in bleeding."
The police report describes how the witness used a napkin to stem the bleeding and captured photos of the injuries with her cell phone, which she later handed over to the officers.
The entire incident was recorded by the hospice's surveillance cameras. The footage, obtained by detectives, corroborates the witness's account of the events.
As of Wednesday morning, Canina Ramos remained in custody at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center in Miami, with her bail set at $2,500.
