The Dual Realities: Tamara Marrero's Lavish Lifestyle in Cuba and Her Family's Miami Comfort

Tamara Marrero Cruz, sister to Cuba's Prime Minister Manuel Marrero Cruz, leads a life of luxury in a Cuba that starkly contrasts with the everyday struggles of ordinary citizens.

While millions of Cubans endure power outages, long lines, and widespread shortages, she enjoys extravagant birthday parties, promotes her private spa, and frequents pools, restaurants, and gyms, indifferent to the crisis suffocating the nation.

Tamara has turned her daily life into a showcase of lavishness and indulgence.

The independent media outlet Cubanet highlighted this on January 26, reporting that "Tamara Marrero Cruz flaunts a lifestyle of luxury and excess that is only possible under the protection of power," accompanied by images depicting opulent parties, spa sessions, elegant dinners, and wellness routines far removed from the national context.

This hypocrisy was also noted by journalist Mario J Penton, who sarcastically remarked on social media: "Manuel Marrero's sister knows how to live it up! Private spa, business ventures in Holguín, and she sent her two daughters to Miami [...]. Hypocrisy at its finest."

The public exposure not only reveals a privileged private life but also exposes the mechanisms of impunity and favoritism that allow a ruling class to demand sacrifices from the people while living in comfort.

The Unchecked Entrepreneur

Tamara Marrero doesn't hide her entrepreneurial ventures; rather, she proudly promotes them on social media.

Her personal enterprise, Relax Jaracho, is a private spa located in her Holguín home, offering massages and facial treatments with products she deems "completely natural."

From oatmeal and honey masks to chocolate therapy and essential oils, the business operates with a professional image and its own brand, complete with a logo.

Yet, Relax Jaracho doesn't appear in official microenterprise records nor as a formalized business, a status that in Cuba would typically subject entrepreneurs to inspections, penalties, and even confiscations if operating without a license.

Nevertheless, Tamara operates without apparent restrictions, and not just from her home. By 2024, Cubanet noted she also had a sales stand in the central Plaza de la Marqueta, part of a state-led local development program.

There, she sells items ranging from aromatic oils to decorative trays and personalized gifts, many bearing her commercial signature.

Her partner and friend, Jorge Zayas, owner of "Decoraciones Jorge e Irán," confirmed her active presence in that space, describing it as a well-stocked, varied store with "distinctive Holguín details."

Tourism Luxury and Humanitarian Connections

Her private business is not her sole source of income or strategic connections.

Since 2015, Tamara has worked as a masseuse and sales promoter at the spa of Paradisus Río de Oro, one of eastern Cuba's most exclusive resorts. This position has allowed her to establish direct contact with tourists and international clients, some of whom avail themselves of her private services outside of work hours.

But there's a more significant aspect: Tamara also serves as a preferred channel for receiving donations from humanitarian groups like Canada's Not Just Tourists.

From her hotel position, she receives supplies, medicines, and aid suitcases for children, which she then delivers—often with her image prominently featured—to provincial hospitals like Holguín's Pediatric Hospital.

A Life Celebrated and Publicized

Far from hiding, Tamara frequently shares glimpses of her social life: nights out, gym routines, restaurant visits, private parties, reggaeton concerts, and relaxing moments with Baileys in hand.

Her birthdays are meticulously decorated events, featuring large-format cakes, professional photography, and diverse themes.

All this starkly contrasts with the country her brother leads: a nation where the majority lack stable access to milk, meat, medicine, or public transportation.

“Always smiling, drink in hand, Tamara enjoys a Cuba that doesn't exist for most,” emphasized Cubanet in their report.

Two Daughters, Two Paths to the "Enemy"

The narrative of privilege doesn't end with Tamara. Her daughters, Giselle and Lorena Selcis, grew up immersed in this parallel world.

In 2017, Lorena celebrated her 15th birthday with a lavish party at Holguín's Club Siboney, decorated by Jorge Zayas.

However, even this life of advantages wasn't enough to keep them on the island.

Giselle arrived in the United States in 2022 through the Mexican border and sought asylum, while Lorena entered in late 2023 thanks to the Biden administration's humanitarian parole.

Today, both live in the country the Cuban government deems an enemy, while their uncle leads the harshest speeches against Washington.

As warned by researcher Luis Domínguez, president of the Cuban Repressors Project: “They are two elite youths, beneficiaries of power in Cuba [...]. Neither they nor their family have ever struggled, and not even they believe their uncle's promises of national improvement. They've left too.”

The Dual Cuba Sustained by Impunity

The Marrero family's case is not isolated but illustrative of the double standard on which Cuban power is based.

While resistance and austerity are demanded from the people, those in control and their close ones have unlimited access to private businesses, donations, visas, luxuries, and even asylum in the United States. The rules don't apply equally to everyone.

Tamara Marrero Cruz holds no public office or formal state role, but her impunity and privileges stem from her last name and direct connection to power.

She doesn't believe in the system's restrictions, and her daily life proves it.

And those around her—including her daughters—also don't believe in the promised future. They've already moved on.
