In the early hours of January 25, a devastating traffic collision shocked the residents of Macario, located in the Contramaestre municipality of Santiago de Cuba. The incident involved a racing motorcycle and a large truck, crashing violently near the entrance of the municipal hospital.

The tragic accident resulted in one fatality and at least one injury.

Yosmany Mayeta Labrada, a local reporter, described the harrowing scene on Facebook, capturing the community's horror.

"Several individuals lay sprawled on the pavement, surrounded by scattered debris from the motorcycle, which was completely destroyed in the collision," he recounted.

"The motorcycle was lodged into the truck's wheels, and the impact propelled the riders several meters away," he added.

As a result of the crash, Damián Pérez, a 26-year-old man, was confirmed dead at the scene. Originally from La Maya, he had been living in Contramaestre.

Additionally, at least one person, Brian Jr. Gandalia, was injured and rushed to the nearby hospital. His current condition remains unknown.

The incident ignited a wave of reactions on Facebook, where many users linked the tragedy to the frequent illegal motorcycle races reportedly taking place in the area.

A local homemaker expressed concern: "Every night, you can hear those motorcycle races… the Traffic Police need to act because everyone knows about this."

Another Contramaestre resident commented, "Motorcyclists believe they have more control over the road than any other vehicle, and these are the consequences."

Many agreed that excessive speed and lack of control are endangering drivers and pedestrians alike.

One woman alleged that "in Trocha, it's all night long with motorcycle racing," while another user remarked, "Here in Contramaestre, it seems like the traffic authorities are non-existent," highlighting the lack of effective enforcement.

Several comments emphasized that numerous drivers operate without experience or safety measures. "These aren't motorcycles anymore; they're planes on the road… often without a license or helmet," a neighbor wrote.

The accident in Macario once again raises concerns about the dangers posed by racing motorcycles in the hands of inexperienced riders and the persistent illegal competitions that, according to locals, occur night after night in Contramaestre.
