Russian leader Vladimir Putin has speculated on the hypothetical cost of purchasing Greenland, drawing a parallel to the 19th-century acquisition of Alaska. He suggested that the price could range from approximately $200-$250 million to nearly $1 billion, taking into consideration the value of gold and the 1867 transaction.

According to the EFE agency, Putin made these remarks during a session of Russia's Security Council, the second such meeting that week. This comes amid renewed interest from U.S. President Donald Trump in negotiating a deal over the Arctic island, despite Denmark's resistance to altering its sovereignty.

In his comparison, Putin highlighted the size of Greenland relative to Alaska and stated that based on the amount paid by the United States in 1867, the cost would be around $200-$250 million. He further elaborated that if the gold prices of that era were considered, the figure could soar closer to $1 billion, asserting that the United States could potentially reach this valuation.

Putin recalled that Washington purchased Alaska from the Russian Empire in 1867 for $7.2 million, an agreement that was mocked by American media at the time, as he noted.

Despite presenting these figures, Putin maintained that the issue of Greenland is "not their concern" and expressed confidence that Washington and Copenhagen would eventually reach some form of understanding.

In this context, the report also notes that Putin mentioned Denmark's historical treatment of Greenland as a colony, describing it as "harsh," as reported by the Russian news agency TASS.

Putin's statements coincide with Trump's comments at the Davos Forum, where he discussed a potential "framework" with NATO concerning Greenland, emphasizing that he would not resort to force to acquire it, although he stressed its importance for U.S. security.

This isn't the first instance of Putin addressing the topic. Previous media reports have captured his assertions that U.S. plans regarding Greenland are "serious" and have "historical roots," dismissing the notion that it is mere rhetoric.
