On Monday, U.S. President Donald J. Trump suggested that the time has come to address the Russian threat in Greenland, criticizing Denmark for allegedly ignoring NATO's warnings about the increasing military risks in the Arctic for years.

“For two decades, NATO has urged Denmark to counter the Russian threat in Greenland. Unfortunately, Denmark has failed to act. The time has come, and action will be taken!” Trump declared via his Truth Social platform, a message echoed by the official White House account.

Trump's remarks coincide with a wave of protests in Greenland and Denmark opposing Washington's plans to extend its influence over this strategically positioned autonomous territory, rich in natural resources.

This past weekend, thousands took to the streets of Nuuk, the Greenlandic capital, as well as various Danish cities, to voice their opposition to the U.S. president's threats. Protesters chanted slogans advocating for the Arctic territory’s right to self-determination free from foreign interference, carrying signs that read “Greenland is not for sale” and “Our land, our future.”

Greenland's Prime Minister, Múte B. Egede, led the march in the capital, asserting through a megaphone that the territory “is not for sale.”

Amidst escalating tensions between Washington and Copenhagen, the backdrop is the increasing Russian military presence in the Arctic, a region pivotal to global strategic balance. Trump has emphasized that the United States “will not allow Moscow to continue extending its influence” in the area.
