A recent survey conducted by the AP-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research reveals that 56% of American adults feel that President Donald Trump has overstepped in utilizing military power to intervene in foreign nations.

Carried out from January 8 to January 11, 2026, shortly following the capture of Venezuelan dictator Nicolás Maduro, the poll indicates a prevailing disapproval among Americans concerning the foreign policy of the Republican leader. There is a notable concern about Washington's escalating military involvement overseas, as reported by AP.

The findings demonstrate that 61% of respondents disapprove of Trump's handling of foreign policy, compared to 37% who approve.

Regarding the Venezuelan situation, 57% voiced a negative opinion on the White House's actions.

The survey also highlights a significant partisan divide. While 86% of Democrats and 63% of independents believe Trump has gone too far, 71% of Republicans think his military actions have been "appropriate."

Only 8% of Republicans feel the president has not done enough in terms of foreign intervention.

Despite the criticism, certain groups see positive aspects in the recent military operation in Venezuela.

About 53% of Americans described it as "a positive development" in curbing drug trafficking to the United States, and 44% believed it would benefit the Venezuelan populace.

However, only 35% think the intervention enhances national security and 32% believe it favors the U.S. economy.

The study also reflected a growing desire to reduce the U.S.'s global role: nearly half of those surveyed want the country to adopt a "less active" stance in international matters, while only two out of ten think it should become more involved.

The AP-NORC survey included 1,203 adults and has a margin of error of ±3.9 percentage points.
