Immigration lawyer Kathia Quirós has raised concerns about the U.S. government's increasingly stringent immigration policies, which have led to the cancellation of tourist visas for reasons ranging from minor traffic violations to extended stays in the country.

In an interview with Noticias Telemundo, Quirós highlighted that tourist and student visas are the most affected by these recent revocations. She clarified, "These are non-immigrant visas, intended for people who wish to enter the United States temporarily, not for those residing here."

Quirós explained that U.S. authorities are scrutinizing the records of visitors who have had any encounters with law enforcement, including traffic tickets. Many have received notifications that their visas have been revoked due to such encounters.

"If they've had any police interaction, it's even worse. And if they've come into contact with ICE, it's far more serious," Quirós cautioned.

Recommendations for Tourists

The attorney advised holders of tourist visas to limit their stay in the U.S. to no more than 30 days, as longer visits are currently seen as suspicious. "The key is to visit and leave as quickly as possible. Under the current circumstances, a tourist visit should not exceed 30 days," she emphasized.

Quirós also mentioned that financial criteria are being strictly enforced, with consulates granting visas only to those who can demonstrate the financial means to support a tourist trip. "Over 30 countries—including Cuba, Venezuela, and several African nations—are required to pay bonds to ensure that the visit is purely for tourism," she noted. In some situations, these bonds can be as high as $15,000, she warned.

Impact of Stricter Immigration Policies

The recent changes are part of a broader effort by the U.S. to tighten immigration policies, aiming to curb abuses of temporary visas and enhance oversight of those who overstay their permitted duration in the country.

Understanding U.S. Visa Cancellations

Why are U.S. tourist visas being canceled?

Tourist visas are being revoked for reasons such as minor legal infractions and extended stays in the U.S., as the government tightens immigration controls.

What should tourists do to avoid visa cancellation?

Tourists are advised not to stay longer than 30 days in the U.S. and to avoid any legal issues, as these could trigger visa revocation.

What financial requirements are being enforced for visa applicants?

Consulates are demanding proof of sufficient financial resources to fund a tourist trip, and in some cases, bonds up to $15,000 are required to guarantee the visit is for tourism.
