Discovering the Origins of Popular Cuban Names Starting with 'Y'

David Domínguez Francisco, a Cuban content creator known on social media as dvd.francisco, recently posted a video unveiling the historical roots of several popular Cuban names. Contrary to popular belief, he explained these names are not contemporary inventions.

In his video, Domínguez clarified that many of the common names in Cuba have existed for centuries and stem from languages such as Arabic, Hebrew, or Italian.

For instance, the name Yasmani is of Arabic origin and is the masculine form of Yasmin, which literally means "jasmine flower."

On the other hand, Yosvani is derived from the Italian name Giovanni—equivalent to John—meaning "God's mercy." Its feminine counterpart, Giovanna, gives rise to names like Yovanna or Yovanka, all carrying a similar spiritual connotation.

The video also highlighted the names Yaser and Yasel. Despite their phonetic similarity, they have distinct origins: Yaser, ending in "r," is Arabic for "rich" or "prosperous," while Yasel, ending in "l," comes from Hebrew, meaning "God's portion."

Another name with biblical roots is Jordan, which has variants like Yordanka and Yordanis, all linked to the Jordan River, a significant symbol in the Middle East.

Among male names, Osmani stands out with its Turkish-Arabic roots associated with Osman. This name carries various meanings, including "young snake," "bird of prey," or "divine protector."

On a softer note, the name Shabeli is a diminutive form of Isabel, possibly originating from a child's phonetic attempt to pronounce the original name.

Domínguez also mentioned Shetling, a variant of Shirley, which comes from Old English and means "bright meadow" or "shining prairie."

Lastly, he explained the names Yamila, Yumila, or Yamile, all of Arabic origin, sharing the meaning "beautiful."
