Rubio Hints at Potential Increased U.S. Pressure on Cuba

Monday, January 5, 2026 by Felix Ortiz

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has suggested that Cuba may be the next focus for increased American pressure.

During an appearance on NBC's 'Meet the Press,' Rubio refrained from explicitly stating whether Cuba would be a target under the Trump administration but hinted at the possibility of forthcoming measures.

"I'm not going to discuss our next steps or policies at this moment, but it's no secret we are not fans of the Cuban regime," he stated. The Cuban-American politician labeled the Cuban government as "a major issue" following the events in Venezuela and the capture of Nicolás Maduro, pointing out that the Cuban regime played a significant role in safeguarding the former Venezuelan leader.

Rubio further mentioned that Maduro's security apparatus was under the control of Cuban agents. "It was the Cubans, not the Venezuelans, who were guarding Maduro," he noted.

"His internal security apparatus and intelligence system — those who watch over others to prevent betrayal — are entirely run by Cubans," Rubio asserted, explaining that this "internal colonization" partly accounts for the close reliance between Caracas and Havana.

He also spoke about opposition leader María Corina Machado, describing her as "fantastic" but noted she is currently outside Venezuela.

"María Corina Machado is fantastic, someone I've known for a long time, along with the entire movement, but we're dealing with the immediate reality," Rubio remarked.

"The immediate reality is that, unfortunately and sadly, the vast majority of the opposition is no longer present in Venezuela. We have short-term issues that need to be addressed promptly," he added, referring to a potential opposition-led transition.

Additionally, Rubio emphasized that Washington will continue targeting vessels linked to drug trafficking and seizing sanctioned ships transporting oil, a policy that has already resulted in numerous casualties at sea and keeps several regional countries on edge.

In the 'Meet the Press' interview, Rubio denied the existence of a war against Venezuela but unequivocally supported the military operations ordered by President Donald Trump. He explained that these actions are about "enforcing the law" in both the fight against drug trafficking and the implementation of oil sanctions.
