On January 2, 2026, Cubans living in Mexico took to social media to describe the fright they experienced when a 6.5 magnitude earthquake, centered in San Marcos, Guerrero, shook Mexico City and other regions with significant force.

The earthquake left at least two people dead, according to reports, which also noted an intense period of aftershocks, with 546 recorded by 2:00 PM, the strongest being 4.7 in magnitude. The seismic alert was triggered, notifying thousands through their mobile phones, as 95% of antennas broadcast the warning.

Local authorities in Mexico City activated civil protection protocols, reporting incidents related to evacuations and emergency responses, as well as conducting preventive inspections of infrastructure and buildings. Meanwhile, Cubans in Facebook groups shared their personal experiences during the quake.

One user, content creator Dalgis López, humorously recounted being startled from sleep, initially mistaking the seismic alarm for his phone alarm. Another, journalist José Luis Tan Estrada, remarked, “It shook really bad,” while López added that the iconic Ángel de la Independencia monument swayed considerably.

In Guerrero, the earthquake caused temporary disruptions to telecommunications and power supplies, with reports of cell service outages in San Marcos due to power failures and subsequent electrical issues. The Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) announced that service was gradually restored, reaching 99.8% completion before full recovery in Mexico City and the State of Mexico, as confirmed by authorities.

Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez expressed solidarity over the loss of lives and assured that Cuban nationals in Guerrero were contacted and found to be safe, ready to assist if necessary. As aftershocks and damage assessments continue, the accounts of Cubans in Mexico highlight the emotional impact of a quake that caught many off guard during their daily routines. The seismic alert, the rush to safety, and the feeling that “it shook really bad” once again tested the resilience and preparedness of a city well-acquainted with tremors.

While the earthquake's aftermath continues to unfold, these personal stories reflect the stark reality and vulnerability faced by residents in earthquake-prone areas, reminding everyone of the importance of preparedness and community solidarity in the face of natural disasters.
