Cuban comedian Geonel Martín, beloved for his iconic character Gustavito, recently opened up about his life away from the island in an interview. Speaking candidly from Miami, he revealed that despite everything, "I was happier in Cuba."
Martín clarified that his move wasn't driven by ambition but by necessity. "I came here seeking more happiness for myself and because my children needed a country like this, not a devastated Cuba," he shared during his appearance on El Show de la Familia Cubana. Yet, he acknowledged that his past happiness was linked to simpler joys: "Your childhood, your friends, your first love... those things don't happen twice."
With a mix of laughter and nostalgia, he recounted his last tour on the island, where he was warmly welcomed as always. "I had six shows in Matanzas, and when I left the hotel, the line was enormous. I was moved to tears. I didn't expect people to still remember me like that," he said. "In twenty days, I earned five thousand dollars, but the real reward was feeling that love from the audience."
Now accustomed to life in Miami, he admits nostalgia strikes occasionally. "I go to Cuba, and after 15 days, I want to return. I come back here, and after 15 days, I want to go back," he confessed with a chuckle. Despite maintaining his humor, he is clear about what he would change if possible: "We need to remove those who've been destroying the country for years and teach people to fight for what's theirs, not just wait for things to be handed to them."
Currently, Geonel enjoys a peaceful life in Florida, balancing personal projects while never forgetting his roots. "I was happier there," he says, "but here I found peace. And at this stage of my life, that means a lot."
