Alleged Thief Nearly Lynched by Residents in San Miguel del Padrón

Monday, December 29, 2025 by Daniel Colon

An alleged thief was apprehended by locals in the Havana municipality of San Miguel del Padrón.

According to the independent news outlet Cubanet, which shared a photograph of the incident, "many demanded that the police not release him, claiming that in similar situations, detainees quickly return to the streets."

The suspect was caught after several thefts in the area, including clotheslines, a water pump, and other items, according to the report.

The images depict a scenario that has become all too common: some residents attempting to take justice into their own hands, cries of "don't hit him anymore," followed by tense interactions with the police amid a typical backdrop of impunity.

Cubanet decided not to publish the more violent images of the attempted lynching, describing them as reflective of the moral decay in Cuban society.

Several months ago, another alleged thief narrowly escaped lynching by residents of Centro Habana after being caught inside a home in the early morning hours.
