The Spanish government has given the green light to establish a Consulate General in Camagüey, located in the heart of eastern Cuba. This move aims to enhance services for Spanish citizens living and visiting the island, while also easing the growing workload at the main office in Havana.

This decision was made during a meeting of the Council of Ministers, which sanctioned the Royal Decree necessary for setting up the new consular office, according to a statement from La Moncloa.

The Spanish administration highlighted that this initiative addresses the geographical dispersion of the Spanish community in Cuba, the challenges posed by limited internal transport, and the significant presence of Spanish tourists in the eastern region of the country.

Currently, the Consulate General of Spain in Havana is experiencing a continuous rise in the number of registered citizens, visa applications, and other consular services, leading to delays and service bottlenecks. The new consulate in Camagüey will support these functions, expanding its reach across Cuba.

Expansion of Spanish Consular Services

In the same meeting, the Council of Ministers also approved the opening of a Consulate General in Bangalore, India. This decision is motivated by the growing bilateral exchanges with the Asian nation and the previously limited Spanish consular presence there.

Despite the announcement of a Consulate General, Spain has maintained an honorary consular presence in Camagüey since 1999. That year, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs established an Honorary Consular Office with the rank of Vice Consulate, under the jurisdiction of Havana, covering Camagüey, Ciego de Ávila, and Las Tunas, in response to the growing Spanish population and tourist traffic.

Official details from the Council of Ministers have yet to specify the opening dates, exact location, or staffing for the new consulate, as reported by Cubanet.

Back in September, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares, had hinted that the opening of a new consulate general in Cuba would happen "very soon," without providing a specific timeline.

Consular Needs Amid Legal Changes

The establishment of the Consulate General in Camagüey comes at a time when the Law of Democratic Memory (known as the grandchildren's law) has ended in October. Nonetheless, thousands of cases remain unresolved, with a substantial number of Spanish citizens in Cuba still in need of consular support.
