Content creator Anita la Cubanita (@anita.cubanita06) recently shared on social media the emotional and challenging journey of leaving Cuba for Costa Rica with her partner and young son in search of a better life.
Through a series of videos on her TikTok account, Anita documented every step of their journey, from the initial travel preparations to boarding a plane to Nicaragua, and finally arriving by land in San José, the capital of Costa Rica.
Now settled in her new home, she expressed her gratitude to "this beautiful country" for welcoming her warmly and shared her first experience visiting a local market. She was taken aback by the abundance and variety of food available.
"I'm at a loss for words. The reality check was overwhelming. I've never seen so much food in one place. It's astonishing to realize there are so many things that are simply not available in your own country. I can't describe the feeling of walking into a market and finding such a range of fruits, vegetables, meats, everything," she said, visibly moved.
The influencer highlighted the scarcity of food in Cuba, where prices have become increasingly unaffordable for most families, making the abundance in Costa Rica a shocking experience.
"It's incredible to see people buying what they need without worry, because it's affordable," she mentioned in another video.
Now embarking on a new chapter in Costa Rica, Anita understands that adapting and achieving her goals won't be easy, but she remains confident that the effort will be worthwhile.
Her story echoes the sentiments of thousands of Cubans who, driven by economic hardship, lack of freedoms, and the tough living conditions under the communist regime, have left the island in recent years. For many, like Anita, emigration is not just a choice, but the only viable option.
