Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado has expressed her gratitude towards several Latin American governments for their support in the fight for democracy and freedom in Venezuela. She also praised their calls for an end to arbitrary detentions and the release of political prisoners under Nicolás Maduro’s regime.

In a message shared on social media platform X, Machado stated: “On behalf of Venezuelans, we extend our thanks to the governments of Argentina, Paraguay, Panama, Bolivia, Ecuador, and Peru for firmly expressing their commitment to democracy and human rights in our country, and for demanding the release of nearly a thousand political prisoners held by Maduro’s regime.”

The Nobel Peace Prize laureate emphasized that Latin America stands with Venezuela in its “just, legitimate, and irreversible struggle for democracy and freedom.” Her remarks highlight the increasing regional support for political change and the protection of fundamental rights in Venezuela.

Machado’s statement follows the release of a joint communiqué by the six nations advocating for “the peaceful restoration of democratic order and unrestricted respect for human rights in Venezuela.”

The signing governments also voiced their “deep concern over the severe migration, humanitarian, and social crisis” affecting the South American nation, reminding that Venezuela remains suspended from Mercosur under the Ushuaia Protocol on Democratic Commitment.

Additionally, the communiqué references reports from United Nations human rights organizations that warn of ongoing arbitrary detentions and enforced disappearances. These practices are attributed to the repressive machinery of Maduro’s regime and have been repeatedly condemned by the international community.
