A Cuban Amazon delivery driver has been taken into custody by Sweetwater police in Miami-Dade County, accused of stealing multiple packages over recent weeks during the bustling holiday season.
Authorities have identified Diego Alejandro Santana Caner, a 25-year-old Miami resident, as the suspect in a series of thefts that occurred between November 23 and December 11.
Santana Caner was apprehended Monday afternoon at the Amazon delivery station located at 13450 NW 14th St. in Sweetwater. He is now facing charges of third-degree grand theft and trafficking stolen property.
Police officers interviewed a company manager who reported having a discussion with Santana Caner regarding the disappearance of approximately 20 packages, as per Local 10 News.
The arrest report indicates that the Amazon driver admitted to the manager that he had discarded some packages and also sold others, which included a total of eight AirPods.
Additionally, surveillance cameras caught Santana Caner taking food from the company's cafeteria without paying.
Police stated that Santana Caner provided Amazon with a written statement listing the items he took and signed a restitution form for these goods, valued at $2,239.72.
As of Tuesday afternoon, Santana Caner remained in custody at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, with bail set at $10,000 for this case.
However, Local 10 News also reported, based on prison records, that Santana Caner was held for allegedly violating his probation related to a felony charge: staging an accident and filing a false report with the police.
