Venezuelan dictator Nicolás Maduro called for a political and military alliance between Venezuela and Colombia on Wednesday, amid escalating tensions with the United States and warnings from President Donald Trump directed at his regime.

In a discussion with members of the Bolivarian Society, Maduro made a direct appeal not only to the Colombian populace and its social movements but also to the Colombian Armed Forces. He urged them to form a "perfect union" with Venezuela to defend what he described as the sovereignty of both nations.

"My appeal is to the people of Colombia, their social movements, and the Colombian military. I call for a perfect union with Venezuela so that no one can infringe on the sovereignty of our nations and to uphold Bolívar's decree of permanent union and happiness," Maduro declared in a video posted on World Alert on X.

A Call for Historical Unity and Bolivarian Revolution

In his address, Maduro revisited the historical concept of Gran Colombia, a project championed by Simón Bolívar in the 19th century, proposing its "refoundation" as a response to what he perceives as an external threat. According to the Venezuelan leader, the current times demand increased integration among South American peoples, especially emphasizing the Caracas–Bogotá axis.

Maduro expressed his belief that only a regional alliance could advance what he termed the "true Bolivarian revolution," in the face of what he sees as attempts at foreign intervention.

Geopolitical Tensions with Washington

The remarks come at a time of heightened geopolitical tension, characterized by the U.S.'s tougher rhetoric and measures against the Venezuelan regime, including sanctions, blockades, and increased military presence in the Caribbean under the guise of combating drug trafficking.

So far, the Colombian government has not formally responded to Maduro's statements, which analysts interpret as a rhetorical gesture of confrontation aimed at both Washington and the region, occurring during a period of growing international isolation for Caracas.
