In a significant phone call on Thursday, Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed his unwavering support for Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro amidst rising tensions with the United States.

The Kremlin reported that the Russian leader conveyed solidarity with the Venezuelan populace, affirming his complete backing for Maduro's administration as it faces escalating external pressure.

According to Russian state media, the two leaders discussed the future of their strengthened bilateral alliance, which has been in place since the strategic partnership treaty took effect in November 2025.

Both Putin and Maduro reiterated their commitment to advancing joint ventures across sectors such as energy, economy, finance, culture, and humanitarian cooperation.

Explicit Support Amid U.S. Military Actions in the Caribbean

The conversation occurred as the United States launched an unprecedented military campaign in the Caribbean, ostensibly targeting drug trafficking. This operation, involving naval deployments, combat aircraft flyovers, and strikes on suspect vessels, has resulted in numerous casualties, despite a lack of evidence linking the targeted ships to drug smuggling.

Recently, Washington seized a Venezuelan oil tanker off the South American coast, which was en route to Cuba, another ally of Venezuela.

Moscow and Caracas Strengthen Ties

Venezuelan Foreign Minister Yván Gil, in a statement shared on Telegram, affirmed that the Russia-Venezuela relationship is "strategic, robust, and ascending." The statement emphasized Putin's strong and categorical support for Maduro in his efforts to maintain peace, political stability, and economic development.

Putin also underscored that the Venezuelan people deserve full respect as they strive to defend their sovereignty and independence, and confirmed that communication channels between the two governments remain consistently open. Additionally, he offered Russian diplomatic expertise to bolster cooperation in crucial areas such as sovereignty, international law, and regional peace.

Growing Tensions: The Caribbean as a Geopolitical Chessboard

The escalating situation between Washington and Caracas has raised international concerns. Since August, the United States has maintained a significant military presence near Venezuela under "Operation Southern Spear."

The White House's actions, including bombing suspected drug trafficking vessels in the Caribbean and Pacific, have resulted in numerous deaths without independent verification. This has led to increased isolation, with global airlines suspending international flights to Venezuela.
