Colombia at Risk of Becoming the Next Venezuela, Trump Warns

Thursday, December 11, 2025 by Michael Hernandez

In a stern warning from the White House, former U.S. President Donald Trump suggested Colombia may soon face challenges similar to Venezuela's if its leadership doesn't change course.

During a press conference on Tuesday, Trump linked the South American nation to drug trafficking that impacts the United States, suggesting that Colombia's role in drug production and distribution is significant.

When asked by White House correspondent Juan Esteban Silva if he planned to engage with Colombian President Gustavo Petro, Trump dismissed the notion, labeling Petro a "drug trafficker" and emphasizing his indifference towards him. Describing Petro as "quite hostile to the United States," Trump stated, "He’s going to have major issues if he doesn’t get it together," pointing to the country's drug activities.

Trump elaborated, claiming, "They have cocaine factories sending the product to the U.S.," and issued a clear warning: "He better realize it, or they’re next. They’ll also be next. I hope he’s listening. He’s going to be next."

Relations between Washington and Bogotá have reached a historic low point. In October, Trump accused Petro of being "a narcotics leader promoting massive drug production across Colombia," targeting both large and small fields.

Trump's statements were made on the social media platform Truth, where he also announced a halt to U.S. financial aid and subsidies to Colombia. This was later shared by the White House on Facebook.

The verbal sparring followed a controversial U.S. military action in the Caribbean, where American forces bombed a submarine allegedly transporting drugs from Venezuela. Petro argued that the incident occurred in Colombian waters, resulting in Colombian and Ecuadorian survivors.

This clash intensifies a diplomatic rift marked by the decertification of Colombia’s anti-drug efforts, the revocation of Petro’s visa, and a significant deterioration in a crucial regional security partnership.
